5) STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES

A) STRENGTHS

(i) A quality batting unit - RCB has always been one team who has had a tremendous batting unit. Even in this season, when you see a Faf-Virat-Patidar-Maxwell combination at the top, you know that yet again this is a really good top order, and even if one of them plays till the end, their score would be above par. They might promote Willey/Bracewell or Shahbaz up the order as well to get a Left-Right combination. To improve their firepower, they could always play their latest addition in Bracewell or Allen in place of Willey and that would just add more value to their batting order.

(ii) An attacking bowling unit - Siraj has grown to be an excellent wicket taking new ball bowler and will look to continue his wicket taking abilities jn the powerplay this season as well. Harshal is known to be a death bowling specialist. Hasaranga needs no introduction and can always trouble any opposition in the middle overs. With Willey, Maxwell and Shahbaz in the mix of things, they have all phases of the game well sorted to put pressure on the opposition batsmen. On the other hand, these bowlers can take wickets, but also could end up giving plenty of runs because of their attacking nature, i.e., the nature to look for wickets more than preventing the leaking of runs. So, the team would want wickets from them before they leak too many runs.

B) WEAKNESSES

(iii) A weak middle order - Lomror, Karthik, Shahbaz, Hasaranga and Willey might have experience, but they lack in consistency with the bat. Their reliability goes onto the top order because there could be a huge collapse with this middle order, or they could be really explosive, and could go either way, which could be risky for the team to rely on them on most occasions. Maxwell had a great 2022 season, but is also coming on the back of an injury, and has been off action for quite some time. Bracewell is their most recent addition in the side and although he's proved his worth in the NZ domestic and International sides in the middle order, these are completely different conditions and no clue how the team uses him as well. So, an inconsistent middle order could always make it tricky for them, on occasions when the top order fails.

(iv) Josh Hazlewood and Wanindu Hasaranga's unavailability - They were huge assets for the RCB in the 2022 season, with Josh having picked up 20 wickets in the 12 games he played, at a strike rate of just 14, and Hasaranga having picked up 26 wickets in the 16 games he played, at a strike rate of 13, and also was the 2nd highest wicket taker of the season (highest until the finals). Not only their wicket taking ability, but their experience come in handy too. These two injuries would be a huge loss to the side undoubtedly. Though they have Topley and Willey as backups, Hazlewood has always been a consistent performer with the new ball, and unfortunately no like to like replacement for Hasaranga. They'll just hope that both these players are fit to play again soon.

6) NEW ADDITIONS TO THE SQUAD FROM IPL 2022

(i) Reece Topley - An attacking left arm seamer from England. He goes for wickets and is a consistent wicket taker. He's been playing T20s since 2015 and is an experienced campaigner having played 127 games in this format across the world, and has picked up 169 wickets at that. In 2022, he played 16 T20Is for England and picked up 17 wickets, at a strike rate of 21, which shows that he'd give you one wicket in almost every game. It's the first time he's been a part of an IPL franchise, and he could walk straight into the XI as well, in the absence of Josh Hazlewood.

(ii) Himanshu Sharma - He hails from Rajasthan and hasn't played any competitive cricket, but only club cricket. He has been backed by the scouts of RCB and they've had him in their RCB camp for a good long time training under their coach Sridharan Sriram. He has been taken into the squad with future prospect in mind and if he features this season, he's an exciting leg spinner trying to make a mark on debut, whenever that happens.

(iii) Michael Bracewell - This batting all rounder from New Zealand has had consistent performances for Wellington in the Super Smash League as well as the One Day and First Class formats over the past few years. He has performed with both bat and ball. He finally got a call-up to the Kiwi side and has made a huge mark already with match winning performances and is known for single-handedly changing the entire course of the game with either bat or ball, or at times both as well. He has a lot of experience, but when it comes to Indian conditions and the IPL, it's gonna be a good challenge for him. With the absence of Hasaranga, he is sure to take the middle order overseas spot as well.

(iv) Rajan Kumar - A left arm seamer from Uttarakhand. He played the domestic format for the first time in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022, having picked up 10 wickets in 7 innings, at an economy rate of less than 6. He takes a short run-up, but bowls at a decent pace and uses his wrist and shoulder to hit the pitch hard and bowls more of good and short length deliveries trying to make use of the bounce offered by the wicket to deceive the batsmen.

(v) Avinash Singh - He hails from Jammu and Kashmir. He hasn't played a single domestic game for them yet. He has only played two games for East Central Railways. Ue had an action similar to that of Umran Malik. He bowls at a speed of more than 145 kmph. The management expects him to bowl more than 150 kmph by the time the season starts. He's an exciting young talent to watch out for, if given a game.

(vi) Manoj Bhandage - A batting all rounder from Karnataka. He has had a couple of decent seasons in the domestic circuit, and being from Karnataka itself, the RCB scouts surely look at him as a young prospect for the long run. He has played only 15 games in the T20 format, having scored 116 runs at a strike rate of 155, and having picked up 8 wickets to his name. He has played 7 games in the Karnataka T20 Premier League, wherein he's scored 100 runs at a strike rate of 196, and picked up 7 wickets.

(vii) R Sonu Yadav - A seam bowling all rounder from Tamil Nadu. He's an exciting talent to watch out for. A wicket taking bowler as well as an explosive hitter down the order. In the previous edition of the TNPL, he picked up 8 wickets in 8 games, and had scores of 26(7)* and 34(23) with the bat as well, proving his worth as an all rounder. In the 5 T20 games he's played for Tamil Nadu, he's picked up 9 wickets at an economy of less than 8. He is a good future prospect for the side.

7) STATS FROM OVER THE YEARS (as part of any team before this)

-> Siddarth Kaul - Wickets (58), Avg (29.98), SR (20.84) - 55M/55I

8) UNKNOWN PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR IF THEY PLAY

(i) Suyash Prabhudessai - The One-Day format captain for Goa, he made a debut in the IPL 2022 with the RCB, and scored a quickfire 34(18), though couldn't capitalize on that debut in the season, having scored just another 33 runs in the next 4 innings. His strike rate that season also came down to 113.5. For Goa, however, he has played 31 Innings in the T20 format, and has scored 663 runs, at an average of 28, and a strike rate of 132. He would look back on his debut game for RCB, and would look to work on that this season, if he gets a chance to play.
